About gisdatadepot.com

gisdatadepot.com publishes practical guides and reference data for people who need public GIS data: where to find it, how to check what a layer actually contains, and how to use elevation data without hiding its limits. Each page answers one question, links to the original publisher, and records exactly what was tested and what was not.

Independent and new

This is a new publication under new ownership. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a continuation of any previous operator of this domain, and nothing published here before 2026 is republished. No earlier catalogue records, data lists or downloads are revived. Some older addresses now lead to a new page on the same subject; that page is new work.

The data finder and the comparison tables point to the organisation that publishes each dataset. We do not copy, mirror or redistribute third-party datasets. Licence and terms statements are recorded as each source states them, with the date we checked; they are not legal advice, and the source’s current terms always govern.

How pages are made

Pages are drafted with AI assistance from publisher documentation, software documentation and our own reproducible tests. Each page’s Tested box names the environment, software versions and date, and lists what was not tested. The methodology and editorial policy set out the rules.

Review

We are adding independent technical review by a named GIS analyst. When a page has been reviewed, the reviewer’s name, credential and review date appear at the top of it.

Code, data and sponsors

Code examples are original and MIT licensed. Our compilations and observations are licensed under CC BY 4.0; the datasets and software they describe keep their own terms. Some pages may carry a clearly labelled sponsor module after the main content; sponsors never affect answers, dataset rows or results. See disclosure.
